The Lansing Board of Water and Light (BWL) is a municipally-owned utility providing electricity, water, wastewater treatment services to the greater Lansing area. BWL serves over 90,000 electric customers in an eight county service territory including Ingham County as well as parts of Eaton and Clinton counties. The company also provides natural gas for about 10 percent of its customer base within city limits only. Its power generation sources include three hydroelectric plants on the Grand River with total capacity up to 40 megawatts; two coal fired power plants located near downtown Lansing that generate approximately 500 MWs; one landfill methane plant generating 1MW; four solar arrays totaling 2MWs spread throughout their system which serve all customers equally regardless if they have rooftop or not.; six wind turbines at various locations producing 4 MW’s ;and numerous energy efficiency programs designed to help reduce consumption by residential & commercial/industrial consumers alike
