The Rage Model, developed by Dr. John Gottman in the 1970s, is a behavior change model that explains how couples interact and respond during conflict situations. This model identifies five stages of anger: physiological arousal (the body’s physical response to an emotion), cognitive appraisal (how one interprets their emotions), expression of emotion (verbalizing or displaying feelings outwardly) behavioral response/action taken as a result of these emotions, and resolution/disengagement from the situation. According to this theory when one partner becomes angry with another it can lead to destructive behaviors if not managed properly; therefore it has been used extensively in couple’s therapy as well as other types counseling interventions for individuals dealing with difficult emotions such rage or aggression
